I have been trying to get this motor back to full power since last year... top end works for a little while then gets "4-strokey", "flutter sound" and loss of power, won't go to WOT after a little while.

Smells rich.

I have rebuilt carb, new points, condensor, setup gap and timing.

Looking at fuel pump this weekend, inner diaphram is very thin/floppy... may be normal.

? If the diaphram were to leak, wouldn't this cause fuel to enter the "intake" area under the pistons? This would cause motor to run fine for a while then get too rich when this extra fuel builds up..... what do you think, am I on to something here?

Rebuild kits all look wrong, this pump is a rectangle about the size of pack of smokes. It seems to have same mount as the newer square small pumps... holes line up...

Can I substitute a new "newer" model pump?
What is part number for the correct rebuild kit for this pump (motor is MQ-10)?

If you look at your carb there is a screw for draining it,at the front bottom, remove it and run a thin wire [paper clip fully extended] threw the opening as far as you can, this will make sure your high speed jet is clear of debris. The gas smell sort of sounds like the float level may be to high, did you replace it[cork type float]

yes on carb... kit had new cork float.. I set it up to be parallel with carb body when upside down... would you suggest making it lower ( rising away from carb body when upside down)? this would shut off fuel earlier... hmmm...

the high speed port is clean, had it out the other day... no junk in there...

I read on this board to remove the fuel pump from engine and squeez bulb to pressurize it, look for fuel leak back to manifold port.. does this sound right???

Can the newer pump work on this motor?

anyone have part number for the rebuild of the older pump?

Re: 9.5, 1964, fuel pump questions

When your holding the carb level and the float is hanging down,it should be 1 and 7/16 inch from bottom of float to carb body.... then if you turn it upside down and the needle valve is closed the float should be 13/16 inch [float bottom to carb body[cast]]When you had the carb off were the leaf plates under it flat and tight to the leaf base???? If you suspect a fuel delivery problem discontect your fuel lines and blow them out would be the first step before throwing parts at it
