first cadet dan here sirs.

'68 9.5 evinrude. I found a broken rubber or plastic hose a few inches directly underneath the carburator (not actually connected to carb). It was really brittle and broke easily, It's about 4" long and the ports are a few inches horizontal from each other; the hose forms a u as it connects to them. anyway, I've replaced it already and was wondering what the hose is for. Would it effect engine performance with it broken that way?

thanks daniel

It is an oil return hose.It looks like \_/ .It is a good idea to have it there so you will not have oily crap in the bottom of your cowling.Besides,it is always a good idea to keep the crank case well sealed so no false air can penetrate which would make for a leaner mix.

thanks for the reply rolmops

I'm guessing the hose had been cracked for a while cause the oily mess is there. I replaced it with a rubber hose I got from an auto parts store, will this suffice or do I need a special hose of sorts?
Also, does a broken oil return hose affect engine performance?

It does really have much of an impact on performance and any old piece of hose will do as long as it fits and does not melt with a bit heat or gasoline
