9.5 evinrude sportwin 1980 water pump

I have a 1980 evinrude sportwin. I bought it last week. I have run a mercury classic 50 and water would spit out in a steady stream constantly. The guy I bought the evinrude from said it doesn't spit water out like that. Instead it comes out the exhaust hole. Can anyone tell me if this is true? Should I be seeing a stream of water when the engine is running? So far I've only run it at idle speed and water come out of the exhaust enough to wet my fingers, but it's not a steady stream.

I forgot to mention in the post that My motor is a 9.5 hp

I have the same motor but a 1967 model. I have the same type of "spray", instead of a steady stream with mine. While idling the steam is not a solid stream like I'm used to seeing, but rather a "spray". At running speed I tried looking behind the motor to check, and it appears that the waters does turn into a large somewhat solid stream.<br /><br />Although, I did just get this motor and I have not checked my water pump and have only had the motor out on the water twice to try it out.<br /><br />Hopefully someone else will ring in and give us a definet answer.

that engine isnt a 1980 they stopped making those in 74<br />i think you been had..<br /><br />that said<br />there should be water pissing out of the exaughst relief on the left side of the motor at the back , how does the engine run?

So far I've only run it with the foot in a large trash can full of water. It seems like it runs fine.

how much water did u have in ther , the intakes on that engine are ABOVE the AV plate , you need to have at lease the entire foot covered with water

Yeah, I had enough water in the trash can. Joeykt's engine seems to do the same as mine. By the way, I looked up the model # and my engine is a 68 model.
