I have 1972 9.5 Evinrude. It will not hit a lick. I have fire according to a spark tester. I am getting fuel according to the wet plugs. And I have @ 70 lbs of compression on both cylinders. Any ideas? Compression, fire, fuel, why wont it run. Maybe I dont have enough fire.

I would say that is about where I had the tester set. Although one is orange in color and the other more white. Which tells me one is hotter than the other. But wouldnt it try to start even if one cylinder was missing?

Yes it will cough and may even run a bit. Sounds like you have good (or good enough) spark then. Don't expect thunderbolts from those old points magnetos.
Focus in on fuel then - either too much or too little. Put a little pre-mix in a windex type bottle, spray it down the carb's throat and see if it'll run a bit on that.
70psi should be enough compression for it to run fine on.
One last thing. Just to make sure, you do have the spark plug leads the right way around right? :)

I will try the gas in spray bottle. I beleive I do not have the wires crossed. They are slightly different lengths so I am assuming the shorter goes up top. It would be a stretch to get it on the bottom cylinder. Do you know what kind of plug is supposed to be in this engine?

Yeah, it's supposed to be a Champion J4C gapped at .030". J4C replaces the older J4J plug. If you do a lot of trolling you can try the J6C plug, but keep the same gap.
As for plug wires, that's usually the case. If you want to make absolutely sure, the top plug is fired by the forward most coil. But tracing the spark plug wires up under the flywheel is pretty difficult.
Try the spray bottle - most likely the carb is clogged and simply needs to be rebuilt.

Just fyi. The plugs were fouled. They looked fine but cleaned them and hit them a lick with sandpaper to make sure and motor fired right off. What makes a plug look 100%. Fairly new as well just foul out. They do not look like a carbon build up either. Clean as a pin.

They fouled for a reason. Is your mixture too rich?
