I think im ready to throw in the towel on this thing. when i got it the top cylinder missfired so i replaced the points and condencers. i rebuilt the carb. replaced the impeller. after all that i get is an hour of enjoyment now the bottom cylinder is not firing. i've narrowed it down to the ignition system. again!!!! so anyone have i any idea on whether or not its time to sink it into the north florida cave system forever??? on second thought i could be the heck out of it with a sledge hammer..

Settle down and diagnose the problem. Or for $100 you could simply replace everything with new. Or go buy a new one.

Choice is yours. But I don't see the point in giving up now that your almost done.

Ive got a 9.5 and it sounds like you may have a very simple problem. Did you replace the spark plug wires. They oxidize over time and susequent resistance causes extreme power loss through it. Mine did that and I went through the same thing you have. I mean I was ready to kick it, but then I ohmed the wires out and there it was. A bad wire all this time. I think all you'll need is about 5'(always extra on the cautious side) of solid core copper "lawn mower" wire and the boots to go with it. Also check to make sure that the wires seat deep into the coil. If all else fails and you're gonna chuck it, let me have a crack at your starter. -woody74

When you say "the bottom cylinder is not firing", that could have a two fold meaning.

Are you saying that there is no spark on the bottom cylinder..... or are you saying that you do have spark but the cylinder is not responding.

One would indicate dirty points, something of that nature. The other would indicate a compression problem, faulty leaf valve, something of that nature.

OK, I'm no rocket scientist but I would definately follow guys like Paul and Joe on stuff like this. I just wanted to help a little. Little being the operative word. -woody74

Woody.... No need to downplay yourself. It could very well be a spark plug wire. I've encountered that many times. Keep in mind that every bit of advice helps.

Also - an issue I've had on a few motors over the years - if a coil or condenser has been replaced, if the wires running from the coil and condenser to the points aren't tucked out of the way it's possible for them to rub on the inner hub of the flywheel, which could account for the "ran for awhile, now it doesn't" issue. It may take awhile for the flywheel to rub through the wire's insulation.

Another thought - if the point cam wasn't lubricated in some way (either through a light grease on the cam or using the cam wick with light oil) then it's possible that the points have closed up due to wear of the cam rider.

Either of these could cause a delayed onset spark loss.

- Scott

dont let it beat u.run a compresstion test that is the first part of any tune up. i tend to be an extreamist when it comes to tuning up.lets face it this is a boat motor and no 1 wants a good weekend to turn bad because your motor leaves u stuck out on the water.for a few more bucks its worth the peice of mind knowing u have everything under the flywheel new. the wires are very cheap only being a few bucks so i would change them since u are already in there and they are 30 years old. also make sure there is no play in the points plate side to side, up and down. i have seen these motors where the collars that holds the points plate in the swivel come lose. looks like its a brass collar molded in an aluminum plate. with play in that plate it can mess everything up as far as your points and coil settings. u are dealing with a 30 year old motor so it will take a little harder lookin and figuering when problems like this happen but dont trash it if u do let me know where u are i will be picking through your trash. people frown when i say this but i love them motors and am a happy owner of 6 of them and a tone of parts. take your time with it they are good motors u will get another 30 years from it.
