I got a 70's model 9.5 johnson from my brother in law, his dad bought it brand new back in the day and it has ran great until it was passed down to me. It runs great in neutral and reverse but drop in forwards and it will go at a low idle until i try to get up and go?? it does try to take off but to me it acts like its not getting gas or spark but idk! It does spit and sputter more in forwards and on occasion will get up to top speed once in a blue moon! I dont know much about marine motors but i replaced the coils hoping that would solve the problem but it didnt!! any suggestions on next step i would appreciate and advice! thanks Kash

Try running it with the cowling (cover) off. I've heard that the shift shaft seal directly under the powerhead can come loose on that particular model, and exhaust gets under the cowling and effectively chokes the engine (less oxygen). If it runs fine w/o cowling, I'd suspect that seal. Otherwise, make sure you have good compression, and use a spark tester to confirm 1/4" + bright blue spark before the carb clean. I made a spark tester following instructions I found on this forum, so you can find it. Always try to isolate the true problem before fixing good stuff!

Your getting good answers so far. It does sound like a carb. cleaning and kit is in order. I have a 73 - 9.5 and the points should be gaped to .020 and they must be very clean. If not correct they will cause the motor to run poorly as well. Best of luck. Rick.
