Thanks to FAQ's, I have tried all of the mention remedies to get the cooling water to flow. Water is coming out but very little. Only when it revs does the water obviously come out with more force. I suspect blockage, and will check the grommet however; my question is this: If the impeller housing is noticeably scored on the inside, will this affect it's performance?

Also, i noticed that it will not stay in drive gear. It will go into gear. I can feel the shift (rev, neutral and drive), but when the engine is revved, it jumps out of drive gear only.

If I some one could provide me with some expert advice, I think that I may be able to sleep soundly again.. Thanks

Re: 9.5 Johnson water pump

The '68 9.5 I worked on the other day threw lots of water at idle. If your housing is boogered up, that will definitely affect it, but you just have to cover all your bases. check all grommets, be sure the water intake is unblocked, and make SURE you have plenty of water in your barrel when you run it. It needs to be just below the exhaust ports in the midsection to get plenty of water to the water pump. That's a very common mistake. But usually it won't pump at all if the water level in the barrel isn't high enough.
If you are still unsure, take off your lower unit, use duct tape or whatever it takes to hook up your water hose to the copper water pipe and run it with water hose pressure on it to see how well it spits out water then. If it still doesn't blow out pleny of water, you know it's stopped up somewhere from the copper pipe up. Did it get hot the last time you used it and that's why you're replacing the pump? If so, maybe the grommet under the powerhead got melted?
Good luck,
JBJ

If the housing or wear plate are scored, the pump won't work very well. I always replace the whole thing ... liner or housing, wear plate, impeller, all soft parts. Not that expensive and you know you've got a good pump. The full kit isn't that much to not do it, plus most people haven't done enough pumps to know when to reuse any parts.

Jumping out of gear is usually a worn clutch dog/fwd gear, caused by either age and normal wear or, more commonly, by "gentle" shifting. Sometimes it's just a shift linkage adjustment.
