I have a 1967 Johnson 9.5 hp. My top front motor mount is broken (Part # 380963) This is, I have heard, a common problem. I have also been amazed at how expensive a few pieces of plate steel and a chunk of rubber can be made to cost. Somewhere between $50 and $100, depending on the site.
Has anyone found a way to rework or repair their existing motor mounts to make them better, or at least cheaper? I have an idea that may work, but I do not want to reinvent the wheel here. If someone has a better idea that works, let's hear it.

What if you drilled a hole through both plates of steel, and the rubber mount, and added an additional rubber shock and washer to the outside? Would that not give rubber cushioning in both directions, but limit the movement allowed to the length of the bolt, so you are not depending on the strength of the rubber to prevent the mount from tearing in half?
Not sure if you can draw a mental picture from what I have said. I will try to draw something later.
