9.5 sportwin generic questions

Hi

I have a '68 9.5 sprortwin. I am redoing the cover and see that the sound deadner material (foamy stuff) is really falling apart. Can this be replaced? Does it really need it? And if so with what to replace and how to attach?

I need to replace the shut off switch and want to use a lanyard kill switch is the original switch N.O. or N.C.?

I have read on several posts to be careful running the motor with the cover off. Is that for general safety or due to the function of the motor?

Thanks

Bill

Re: 9.5 sportwin generic questions

Hi there!!!! For my cover....I picked up a foam "yoga" mat at Walmart and cut pieces to fit. I attached it with bulldog PL300 construction adhesive. As for the kill switch.... I think its normally open, but I'll check it with my tester and get back to you. The mat I used is about 1/2 an inch thick. Hope this helps , Drake

no problems with heat? I was worried it might be some heat resistant foam.

I was able to purchase NOS Hood blankets # 310102 and 310101 from sea-way.com in Seattle, Washington last year. If you give them a shout, they may have another set.

I used 3M Scotch-Grip 847 to install the blanket.

The kill switch is in-stock. Any BRP dealer can order that for you.

Running with the cover off - TD can explain that to you.

Re: 9.5 sportwin generic questions

Funny you should ask about the foam. I found a tiny piece laying near the carb. on my 9.5 just recently and thought of the implications if it had been sucked into the carb. I bought a Sea Dog lanyard kill switch for my 9.5. Fit was alright but could have been better. The plate on the front of the 9.5 makes the switch recess a wee bid so the lanyard piece is at a bit of an angle but it works fine. You use the normally open spades. I don't get the joke ....but the 9.5 has a habit of getting exhaust vapor sucked into the carb. when running in a barrel. Many remove the upper cowling as a means of getting more air to ventilate it better. You should not experiance the problem on the water. Best of luck. Rick.

So if I'm guessing right TD got some stitches from reaching into a running engine with the cowling removed. Ouch! I usually just get a rub burn and a good scare from the flywheel. Ya that was cruel..... but taken good heartedly. Rick.

Re: 9.5 sportwin generic questions

Hey MH, I think you'll want to use mormally open, so that it's closed when you have your "key" in from your lanyard. Rick I think mentioned this above. I just went to check mine, and found it Abnormally closed.....that is closed all the time. Looks like I'll be retrofitting a pull stop also. As for the foam.....anything is better than the rotting crap that was in there. The motor doesn't really run all that hot (mind you I run mine for little 15 minute jaunts and the water here is barely liquid so far) The old foam was constantly falling in pieces, and as rick said...it would be hell on a carb, I scraped off all the old, and attached the new. If you were worried about heat, I imagine an auto parts store would sell you some firewall, or hood moise deadener....which has more heat resistance. I tend to cheap out a bit....as I'm poor, and saving for a 4 stroke.

Re: 9.5 sportwin generic questions

I am a fan of a lanyard retrofit, no doubt about it. I have had a couple of bad OMC stock kill switch buttons and have found they are very fixable. You remove it and then roll the rubber off the switch. Inside you'll find some copper contacts. I just brushed them up a little and put it back together and the switch worked fine......... and then I threw it aside and got a lanyard switch. Either way. Rick.
