So I just managed to get a boat that’s been sitting for a while. Has a 1964 Evinrude 9.5 Sportwin. I’m very new to boats. I’ve never been responsible for getting one to work lol. I can get it to start, but only in gear and the throttle maxed out. After a few seconds it’ll cut off. If I squeeze the primer, it’ll run a little longer. Is this a carb issue or something worse? Thanks

If it keeps running as you squeeze the ball on the fuel line, it indicates a bad fuel pump because all the rubber primer ball does is to put fuel into the carb bowl to start the motor then the fuel pump should take over from there. The ball does not have to stay hard once you start the motor under normal conditions.

NOTE: The motor should not be able to start while in gear, especially with the throttle maxed out.

I think the 1964 model 9.5 can be started in gear at full throttle.---No interlocks needed for folks in 1964.------Nothing on the motor that will prevent that.

So I ordered a fuel pump for $17 and a carb kit for $25. Should be here within 10 days. I’ll update after if I don’t break anything trying to fix it lol

Wow, they were not too concerned about safety back then, eh?

I think if you clean that carb and rebuild it, and change that fuel pump, you should be o.k. Be sure to soak that carb body in some kind of carb cleaner solvent when you have it apart, and some kits do not include a new float, so double check your old float before you put things together if your kit does not have a new float in it. Let us know your results when you get everything put back together. Good luck with it.

Alright so I just got done tinkering with the motor and got it to run. I shut it off. Has some black ants in it somewhere lol. They came out when it started running good. Should I still change everything or just keep the parts. What do you think? I’m thinking it was bad gas maybe?

I am going to change the impeller. How warm should the water coming out of the motor be? Asking for a friend 🙃

Nice motor you have there. I used to own a '64 Evinrude 9.5 hp. It needed new coils, points & condensers, and a new carb float - and then it ran awesome. Weighs the same as a 7.5 hp, and runs like a 15, when it's right

Maybe you can help me try to figure out where exactly the idle speed adjustment is. I know the newer models have it on the tiller handle but where is it on the ‘64?

It's been a number of years since I last had the motor.
Memory's a little foggy on that, but I believe racerone is correct.
Somewhere on the top of the cylinder head.
I did have a '72 that I actually got running.
Parted it out because it had an exhaust leak issue and most parts are NLA.
I seem to recall the adjustment on it being on the tiller handle as you had described.
I remember that there was a difference between the two motors, but can't recall the details.
Now that I'm thinking about it, somewhere by the top of the cylinder head/flywheel area?
I vaguely remember seeing some quirky kind of adjustment mechanism that accomplished the same thing the tiller handle adjustment on the '72 did. But that's all I can think of.
