I'd have to look back at old posts to recall exactly what year my motor is but I believe it is a 1967 or 68 Evinrude 9.5hp.
I pulled the powerhead out of the clamshell a couple of years ago to track down an exhaust leak and just got back around to working on it recently. I have replaced the shift rod boot and have a NOS leg seal to go on next. But before doing that I wanted to make sure I was reassembling the leg to the powerhead correct. It's very straightforward, however, I am not seeing anything to indicate that the pilot ring has to be oriented a certain way. I read one old post saying it is a re-use part and that the machined out groove is necessary for it's other use but not in this location. Is that true? Can I drop it in with the groove in any orientation and re-assemble?
