9.8 hp Merc Not Pissing well...

Ok ive got an OLD 9.8 merc outboard model 110.. and now idea what year.. so fired up and the water is not peeing at idle at all.. and only at high rev is it pissing... so we replaced the Impeller and its a little better but not much... any ideas??? Also where is the exhaust on this motor?.. is it out of the propeller?.. Thanks again!!!

I am having the same isue with mine. Their is a rubber tube inside the big tube on the lower unit.Ithik mine is bad letting water by pass tube that goes up to to head. That is just a guess

Can anyone else help with this issue???.. Please.. Does my motor have a thermostat?.. s/n A111853 model 110... mercury 9.8hp... If it does have a thermostat.. can i just remove it and have it running cool water through it at all times??.. would that hurt to do this?.. Also if it does have a thermostat.. where the heck is it???... Thanks for the help!

All I can help you with is I think my motor is close to yours 9.8 110 I put in parts on water tube on mine did not help looking into it I may have gasket bad on head. I hope someone helps us out sounds like we have the same trouble.

try blowing back through peehole with compressed air see if its stoped up some where , mine didnt pee, but has done fine sence replacing immpeller

Mine is a 9.8 110 1973 I think. I hope someone tosses us a rope soon. I have water coming out the exoust hole I do not think this is right.

hummm not real sure, trying to find the yearmodel by serial number chart for ya also, no luck lol , if all tubes ar clear and conected then idk, there may be upper water pump not sure bktheking is who helped me with all my issues on my 72 9.8

I'm not an expert. But just replacing the impeller will not always fix your water flow. If your impeller was bad then the water pump housing itselfe would be worn too. When you buy the complete kit it includes all of the rubber grommets used on the tube connections. These connections leak water if they're not sealed up tight.

Try a parts search for your motor and look for a thermostat. That will tell you if it has one or not. It probably does. And it's probably mounted near the head. (just guessing) but the parts schematic will show it. This site has good parts schematics.

Make sure the pee hole is clean. Real clean. Take the hoses leading to it off. Dirt dobbers and leaf cutter wasps will go way up in there and build a nest.

If it is a through the prop exhaust you should be able to tell it immediatly. Just crank it up on some muffs and see. If it is then I was told by a mercury mechanic that 95% of your spent cooling water comes out of the prop. The pee hole is only for an indecater that your water pump is working.

Water muffs. They hook to a water hose and slide over each side of the water intakes on the side of the foot. They are not as good as running it in a barrel, but they would make it easy to see where it exhausts. You can buy them at walmart or just about any parts store.

Right i got that... but why would you not want to aerate the water.. and why is that bad for the pump... how is it aerating the water.. and whats wrong with that?.. Thanks..

Aerating is air and water. YOU want all water No air.
that's why when boating you want to find the best water you cand find. ALL WATER.

ok i see... so with the drum test you will get water an air going through the pump which means your not going to get a steady stream?.. right ?

i was reading your posts i got a lil different issue took my 88 merc 45 hp out to test run today pissed fine all day had to drop the lower unit to fix the gear and now not pissing??????? but gears all work, is there a hose thats suppose to hook up in the front of the LU?
