I have a Mercury 9.8 hp , 1965 boat motor. I have installed the impeller.
The kit I get from oldmercs.com came with two o rings and one rubber washer .
One of the O rings measures O.D. 5/8” I.D. 3/8”
The nylon washer measures O.D. 5/8” I.D. 3/8” AND IT IS 3/8 TALL

The small O Ring measures O.D. 15/32” I.D.3/8”

Were do the two O rings go?
Were does the rubber washer go? Does the rubber washer go inside of the pump cover, under the guide sleeve.
What is the slinger( Old Mercs said slinger was included in the impeller kit)?

Sounds like the nylon ring is the slinger and goes on the shaft on top of the pump housing. Unusual as slingers are usually rubber. There is a groove below the splines on the drive shaft. The smaller O ring should fit there. Dont know where the other O ring goes.

what is the slingers . what does it do? i called oldmercs the person i talked to on the phone said he did not work on motors he just sold parts. in other words he did not have a clue. does the slinger look like a 3/16 tall coupling or nipple. it does not have any groves or fins . does it go under the 3 '' long guide sleeve

do you bolt the pump cover down then slide the 3/16 rubber slinger down the drive shaft as far as it will go? I had the impeller replaced about 7 years ago by some one that was not a marine mechanic. He may have left it off or it did not origanally have one. i still do not see why it is there. There is a rubber seal inside the pump cover that the shaft go's through. i may need to send some pictures tomorrow.
thinks for the help.

the motor did not pee that is why i am replaceing the impeller. when i took it apart one of the fines was broke off of the impeller would that cause it not to pee? the water tubes are all clear. What do i need to look for before i put it back togeather. and try to start it.

The slinger is there to keep water from shooting up the drive shaft and washing the grease out of the splines. If the fins are broke off you NEED to find EVERY part of them (piece them together like a jigsaw puzzle) or you will have overheating problems forever. Start by taking an air blow gun and back pressuring through the pee hole with the lower off. This usually blows most of them back out of the block and water tube. Also check the pump base they get packed in there too. Overheating can also melt the grommet under the powerhead causing water restriction, but it is fairly easy to pull the head and replace this plastic part.
