Can you use 80w-90 in the lower unit? Year of the motor is 68'. Or does it need to be marine oil. Thanks for any help.

Yes, hypoid gear oil will work in the gearcase, in a pinch. Just keep in mind that Hi-Vis marine gear oil has special additives which promote mixing of water/oil and can reduce corrosion in the case of water intrusion. Regular old gear oil doesn't have this and any water in the gearcase will separate and then you'll have a nice layer of water corroding your gears and bearings.

Most Wal-Marts have a small marine section with a quart of Hi-Vis for around $4/qt. Enough for quite a few changeouts on your motor. They'll usually carry a small hand pump which screws into the bottle and that makes refilling so much easier.

If you don't have a Wal-Mart happy, try NAPA or other auto parts store, most will stock or can get the stuff.
