Iam not sure where to start except that i know it will go into forward gear and not into reverse. Ive looked at the "linkage" or shifter by the power head and it seems to fully move to be engaged. When it is shifted into reverse the prop spins the right way but there is no power to the prop,i can put my boot on it and the prop stops freely. Would this be a gear or lower unit or.........? Any help will be appreciated.
Thank you from N.D.

It should cut your boot open!

ok... Where to start? Let's start with a year, or better still, a serial number... Then we can look at the parts in your engine and make a few more suggestions...

Have a look at the way this guy has posted his question... it's an excellent example of how to get the most help

Re: 9.8 merc no reverse

It is a mid 80s model. There is no power to the prop when in reverse and reving it up. This motor came on a boat i purchased as a kicker , so i know very little(nothing) about it. I dont have the serial # with me but will get it today if its needed.

Sorry for the late reply....

First thing to check is the prop hub.... after that, when a gear (forward or reverse) is selected it should be a 'hard link' all the way to the crankshaft....

Have you remove the gear housing?

i pulled the prop and the prop shaft spins freely, when in forward gear it will spin one way in reverse gear it spins both ways. how does the plastic washer type thing come out that is just inside the gear housing?

The plastic thing is a left hand threaded nut there is a arrow on the outer edge with off to show the right direction. In some case the nut has been pushed out and there is not enough throw for the engine shift linkage to reach rev gear. You will need a spanner to loosen and tighten the nut properly.

Re: 9.8 merc no reverse

Well ,i went out to check on the plastic nut and i ended up using a backward ars country .... method and i must have moved it just enough because i now have reverse. ran the motor and shifted in and out , so far it is ok. Iam sure it is just a temp fix but i do KNOW the gears and every thing is ok , ill probably just need to get a new gear housing cover nut thingy.lol.
Thank tou Laddies for the tip, not sure where you live but i have a fishing trip on Devils lake in N.D. if you are interested in some awsome walleye action:cool:
Thanks again
