1 the ser num is 7168720 I would like to know the year.
And the impellor let go last year in weeds the motor lost power cause of the heat I changed the impellor and made sure the watewr jackets were clear but there is very little water coming out of telltale still sometimes only smoke no water. A gut at work says that in between the powerhead and the lower unit there is a cupseal type seal that melts and you hacve to tear apart the hole unit to get at it and buy a bunch of gaskets? Has any one herd of this

thanks in advance

1985 was the last year they made the 9.8's hmmmm i wonder if yours is an 85 cause i have also checked and that is the last starting number of the serial numbers for the 9.8 hp mercury outboards... so yours might be a 1985.... do you have any pictures for me? or can you describe the cowling in great detail?

Re: 9.8 two questions

ok the serial number starts at 6620196 for the 1985 models and goes up from there.... the 1986 models begin with the letter "A" before the numbers, your engine is a 1985 model

as for your upper water tube seal... heres a simple test to determine if its leaking..... remove your lower unit, attach a bilge to your water tube with some sort of hose and just run it for a few seconds then take the hose off the end of the water tube and plug it with your finger.... there should be NO water coming down from the top of the engine.... if all the water leaks out with your finger plugging the water tube then the seal is gone.... this is what will happen if your run water through your block and there are no leaks and everything is correct, the water will fill up the block, then you will not see any leaks coming down the exaust passage from the water tube.... but when the block is full water WILL be coming down the exause passage and out the telltale (to let you know its pumping correctly)... if everything is ok when you run your bilge pump test.... then i would suggest you have a problem with your lower water tube seal.... heres the test ran on a 7.5 merc hope this helps..... and if the water seems to be flowing up through the engine and not leaking at the water tube seal, then you may have a blocked water passage up in the block... here are the tests

Re: 9.8 two questions

Well I tried the tests but I don't have a bildge pump so I went and bought a drill pump. What a waste of money the pump would not push water up the tube hell it had 0 suction lift at all what a pig to prime. So because it is the middle of June and this motor has been screwed since last summer I took it in today to see what the problem is and get it fixed. So I will let you know what it was and how much the damage was.
