I aquired a classic 70's 9.8 that is in mint showroom condition. It sat in a garage for many years and must be frozen to the saft reminding me of the Tin man in the Wizard of Oz. The impeller vanes looked actually good, but it did not pump water so I guess they must have had a slight set so that they did not create suction. Anyway I tried pulling the impeller out with needle nost pliars and it just tore all of the vanes off so now I all I have is the brass bearing and a thin section of rubber around the brass part. Anyone know how I can get this out? Have it soaking in Areocrill overnight.

use a cut-off wheel in a dremel and carefully split the brass ring

or you can take a heat gun and heat the brass ring, thus expanding it.

Before die grinders became common I've cut them with a hacksaw blade. Use a pair of vise grips as a handle and cut in a pulling motion. It takes a bit more time and effort but it will get the job done.
After you get it cut most of the way through, tap a screw driver or small chisel into the cut to expand it.

A good file works too, just file a flat spot on both sides, then grab the brass with a set of channel locks and twist

PB blaster. Take a hammer and hold it against the brass sleeve, take another hammer and hit the brass sleeve accost from where you are striking the brass sleeve, it work like an impact.

This impeller would be inside the cup.------Work it back and forth or pry it out with 2 screw drivers.

THANKS GUYS...All good advice that I kind of thought of but was afraid of mangling the drive shaft. I will try versions of each of your good advisement and see what happens.

Boy, that old German engineering on the old Mercs always get me perplexed. Went back and tried the screw driver method along with the heating and no go so far. Because of the cup I cannot get a Dremel tool in there. On many OMC's the drive shaft comes out and you can pound on the impeller from the bottom side to force it off the shaft. On this 9.8 the drive shaft does not come out. Don't think the hammer or hacksaw will work because no room to work them because of the enclosed cup. Raceone was right about the cup and the cup won't come off because the impeller key won't allow it to slide over the drive shaft.

I am sure that you can find a way to come up with a " happy ending " on this wee problem.

The hacksaw blade should work because you're only using the blade not the whole saw. If you have a grinder you can reshape the end to go in further.

A friend of mine with 30 years OMC experience says cut it off with a chisel. Going to try that and if that does not work I will pry off the lower half of the impeller housing destroying it in the process and have to buy a new one. Oh, Well, did not want to lose more money on this but what can yo do.

After a few applications of CRC Freeze-off and that not working, tried the chisel method and it worked fine with the soft brass. Since it was a wood chisel it ruined the blade but that is OK. Playing Russian roulette with not knowing where that impeller key was, sure enough I nicked that and will need a new one.
