The good news, a friend of mine gave me a Tahatsu 9.8hp outboard that is an 04 with 12 hours on it. He took it off his aluminum boat and into the shed standing on its skeg till yesterday when he gave it to me. I put it on an outboard motor stand and pulled the string to see if it will just move.. Would not move. Spoke to Peter, he said he didn't put fogging oil or anything. Used it in fresh water and left it in the shed.

OK.. What do we need to do to get her happy and ready to play? How to free up the motor so its not frozen to the walls? Give me the list guys.

You have to determine why it is locked up by going through the engine's various sections...IE power head & lower unit.

Maybe squirt some penetrating oil in the spark plug hole, leave the plug out, put a socket wrench on the flywheel nut and gently see if you can get any movement at all. Put a wooden dowel into spark plug hole and tap lightly with a small hammer to try and get some movement. Piston rings may be rusted to cylinder walls, crank, rod, wrist pin bearings may be corroded. Drop the lower unit and check water pump, lower unit oil, movement. Hope it's not really screwed up. This is what fogging and winterizing is trying to prevent. Let us know what you find and Good Luck!

Start by placing engine horizontal on a stand, remove plugs squirt proper amount of fogging oil or pre mix, let penetrate for a full day , remove rope assembly and with a wrench see if you can turn flywheel CW. If nothing happens, try carb cleaner, W-40. Remove LU to discard jammed issues, then proceed to check the power head.

Happy Boating

Year is unimportant, Model is critical. Is this the MFS9.8A (4-stroke) model? Or is it the M9.8B (2-stroke) model? If a 2-stroke, you may have different problems than if it's the 4-stroke. For instance, it may be seized from forgetting to add oil to the fuel. Otherwise, it could be a situation of rust in the cylinders from dampness. Or for that matter, a broken gear in the LU jamming the driveshaft, etc.

Elvin is correct -- you need to determine whether the powerhead is locked, or something in the LU is jammed. Either way, start with a Factory service manual, available from any dealer, including me, and proceed with a plan.
