Hi there,

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I just bought a used Johnson 9.9 4-stroke.(early 90's I believe)( ran great )
I mounted it and was trolling for 3-4 hours and it quit as if it ran out of fuel.
Primed it again pulled it a few times and got a couple of backfires then got it going and it sounded fine.

It then quit again 15 minutes later and I cannot get it to start again.

A few notes about it :

1. after sitting on the bracket in a fully up position i seem to be getting an oil/oil fuel drip from the carb/filter

2. have oil in the pan after sitting in the travel(up) position then dropping it down to troll.

2. is/was a hard start after being in a fully up position on the transom.

Thanks in advance

well baisically get it home and start trouble shooting.
you need to make sure that you have 3 main things
compression
spark
and fuel
without one it wont work
you can get an ok compression guage from an auto parts store for around 20 bucks and a inline spark tester for like 10 bucks. to check for fuel leave the plugs in and choke the motor while cranking it. pull the plugs and check to see if thier wet. from you saying its running then quits like that i would think you have a fuel problem. also check your oil and make sure nothings contaminated it just on the safe side

Re: 9.9 4-Stroke early 90's - not starting

Hi thanks for the reply,

I have all the necessary tools.
I am going down to do the basic diagnostics now.
I am pretty knowledgeable about 2-strokes and 4-stroke in the larger models but have never worked on a small one yet. Have owned a honda and a YAmaha but neither gave me any trouble so never had to work on them.

I was wondering if these engines had a common problem such as timing belt, oil draining from engine into intake, or other such issues to be aware of.

Compression doesnt seem to be an issue but will do a check to get the actual figures.

one other thing happened at the same time the kill switch wont shut the engine off anymore but it did work fine before the running problem arised.

Update: 9.9 4-Stroke early 90's - not starting

Did a check,

found the following

1. good compression
2. no spark
3. engine is a 1998 OMC 9.9 4-stroke

wondering if anyone knows if the kill switch is a grounded kill (ie; unplugging will let it run or if unplugging will kill it anyways?

other possible ideas?
- black box
- coil
- stator

how to test these for failure?

I've got a 1996 9.9 4-stroke Evinrude, and according to the wiring diagram in the manual, removing the clip on the kill switch grounds the stator coil.
