my old faithful 1988 9.9 md.#J 10 ECCD is trying to tell me somethin' is wrong...starts normal ,but doesn't sound 100% lately...idles o.k. but will stall 50% of the time while idling... but it always did that...........the last time we went to sea the motor would ''miss a beat'' every so often..just a fraction of a second and maybe once a minute...it started at full throttle and then started doing the same at half and slow throttle..but it got me home.....when at home it would not start when i went to flush it.....starting fluid did nothing........after 3hrs,i tried once again and it started right up and ran ok.....any ideas, i'm too old to row ????

If you don't remember the last time the carb was cleaned that is the first thing that I would do. If that doesn't solve your problem when it doesn't start use a good spark tester and make sure that each plug wire jumps a good 7/16" and is bright blue. You might just have a coil that is breaking down when it gets warm.

Agree with fireman57, sounds like you have an ignition componet overheating and shutting down. You can use an inductive timing light to watch the spark on each cylinder and see if the spark is intermittent on a cylinder while at WOT. If it will not start when hot, check spark and see if you have lost spark.
