my old motor was running nicely and suddenly I had a lack of power, 1 coil was dead, after replacing it, I noticed chunks of rubber and black oily sluge in the holes that are just above the cav plate

no water was coming out of the motor, so I want to drop the lower unit to check the water pump, how do I disconnect the shift rod on this model ? do I have to take the whole carb off ?

when I took out the bolts and drop the lower unit 1/2 inch that it allows without disconnecting the shift rod there was an unusual amount of black gook I think. Could this be plugging up the exhaust? more importantly how do I disconnect the shift rod so I could get to the water pump to check ;)

Once you separate the lower unit about an inch you'll see a shift rod coupler between the LU and the midsection. Unscrew one of the fasteners and the shift-rod will come out of the coupler.
