I have a 1978 9.9 Evinrude. I went out and run it hard for 30 minutes, shut it off and drift for awhile then restart, go back across the bay and repeat. I did this for hours without any trouble. When it was time to go back in, I was running it hard, got about half way back in and the motor started to die. It acted like it was running out of fuel. I thought it was going to die. I removed the cover and it seemed to run maybe not better but not any worse, I made it back in. I brought it home and ran it on the muffs fors and hour none stop and it ran fine. Does anyone have any idea what may be going on with this thing? I'm afraid to take it back out with the grandkids on board. This same thing happened to my brother in my boat about a week earlier.

Paul

You might want to try running with a new tank and fuel line. It is the easiest way to eliminate a possible problem from that end.

Also check the screen in the fuel pump for debris.

How long had the gas been in that tank? Dump it out, run fresh fuel, maybe with some Seafoam cleaner in it, available at NAPA or O'Reilly's auto parts stores.

OK guys, the fuel is new, probly ran 20 gallons throught it al ready this season. I did notice that the pump bulb in fuel line would not pump up very hard. I tried pumping it several times when it was acting up, did not seem to make a difference. You would think that if it was starving for fuel pumping the bulb would have made a difference.

Paul
