9.9 Evinrude popping out of gear?

I recently took my 84 evinrude 9.9 and cleaned the carb jets. After reassembly I ran it in my local lake amd the power felt good, like the cleaning worked, but all of a sudden the rpm's jumped up like it was out of gear, but after getting off the gas and re-appyling power it ran good until full power was on, then the same thing, rpm's jumped and it was like it was out of gear again (it also would do the same thing when making a sharp turn)... the gears worked fine before I cleaned the carb, the motor has low low hours on it... did I put it together wrong or do I have "bigger" problems???<br /><br />Any help is appreciated as I need to get it going before local tournament...

Hi Crappiebasser<br /><br />This could be several things. Are you sure your motor is mounted on the boat as before. ( Did you run it on this boat before ? ) It could sound at you catch air and the propeller cavitates. Check if cavitationplate is lined to bottum of boat underline. You could also have spun the hub, pull propeller and take a clouse look at the rubber in center of propeller, from the exhaust side. Does it look normal ? And at last, it can be a damaged clutch dog in gear. Try to hold at gear shift lever when speding. Can you feel forcing, trying to jump out when you accelerate to full speed ? - let us know.

Hi crappibasser<br /> when you serviced your carb you may have miss routed a hose or somthing. Something blocking the shift linkage. Might be your prop slipping on the hub?

The motor is on the same boat in the same position, so I don't think that is the problem, will pull prop and check for damage... I'll let you know...
