Hey all one more question. On my jon boat I have a older 9.9 Evinrude but when I took it out today. When I put it in gear it keeps on popping out of gear when I am driving it. Then i was unable to put it in Reverse. Does anyone know what causes this. My Last Post was deleted for some reason but someone gave me a reply and hope he comes back. PLEASE HELP

Re: 9.9 Evinrude problems

either your shifter is very out of alignment, the connector at the bottom is loose... or you got drive dog issue. When i needed parts for a longshaft to shortshaft conversion for my 15hp i searched ebay, and was able to source a lower complete with short driveshaft, shift rod, and a free nice prop.... for $33 or 35 including shipping. The lower unit is still sitting in corner of shop waiting for me to hit a rock with my current one at 24 or better mph on my 12ft johny ... f no one has a better idea, it might be the cheapest and easiest thing to do.

Sounds like about a 1964, go to marine engine .com you can do a parts search by year then by model. Just enter the year say starting with 1964 it will then ask you to select the model, just keeping changing the year until you find that model #.

Normally with that motor it will be the F gear and clutch dog, they are worn and slipping out of gear, the only fix is replacement of the two.Ebay at this time has some fair priced F gears, the clutch dog may be there also.I just havent been looking for a dog latly.
On this parts list it will be part # 31 and #37

Pretty easy repair its the cost that can get out of control,
Another thing with that lower I do believe the clutch dog can be reversed and the unused ears can be utilitized as new so you will need just the F gear

Re: 9.9 Evinrude problems

ok this is what I did today. I took off the boot and took out the gears they really look good and not worn. When I took out the gears I moved the shift rods and they moved the lever freely. So I cleaned it all up and put it back together and started it and it still did the same. What else can I check. Could it be the shift rods not connected together good in the middle? Just asking. What would you do next. When I remove the boot again I will take some pictures and post up here to show you all and let me know what you all think.

Re: 9.9 Evinrude problems

OK this is what I found after removing it again and inspecting it all very close. The bearing 303380 was worn so I am going to order a new one. I believe since this is worn so bad about 1/8 inch gap between the rod and bearing this would cause it to jump out of gear as well. Let me know what you all think!!!! PLEASE
