9.9 Evinrude Yachtwin, '80 something starts, sputters...

I have a 9.9 Evin. (unknown yr.) as the auxilliary on a 25' sailboat at about 6400' elevation. Had trouble w/ it last summer missing, stalling, not re-starting, etc. Sometimes you could coax into chugging on by monkeying w/ the choke... out a little, in a little. Ususally it's run wide open when it's being used (given the size and weight of the boat). Took it in to the shop in the spring... not sure what they did, other than overcharge me for the plastic idle speed knob ($40!!) that they said could be the problem. Not much better this summer. So many places to look... I know. Any idea on where to start w/o having to take it off and bring it home? Thanks for any help.

Find the model number on the transom mounting bracket or from the quarter sized disc on the power head...we can go from there...

BTW, stick with THIS post, it keeps all replies in one place.

The fact that it tries to run when you fiddle with the choke points to a fuel problem. Start by rebuilding the carb.

Am heading up to the lake (Jackson Lake in Grand Teton Nat'l Park) today... so I'll get the model number, but as long as it keeps chugging along, I'll save the carb rebuild until we pull it out of the water, or it just becomes to unreliable. Thanks guys.

Have done the new gas thing... cleaned out the tank, etc. The problem is somewhat intermitent, though. Is there a fuel filter or sediment bowl on these small motors?

Actually found the original manual... I believe this is the model: E10SELCN Yes?

OK, you're the proud owner of a 1982 9.9 Evinrude. If you have to play with the choke to get her to idle, it points to a fuel delivery problem. Start by rebuilding the carb . Try squeezing the primer bulb when she acts up, does it smooth out, if so, have a look at the fuel pump.

I noticed in the manual that several different spark plugs are "recommended". Champion L77J4, or AC M40FFX, or NKG B9-HS-10. Then it says that "for special operating conditions use Champion L78V"... what exactly would be those "special conditions" high altitude perhaps?

Tried again yesterday... Now the motor will start, but only barely idles for 10 to 30 seconds, regardless of throttle position, then stalls. Changed plugs and noticed that NKG-BR6HS were in there rather than the B9HS10 that are the recommended plugs. Plugs looked wet, but could that be from trying unsucessfully to start it so many times?? (i.e. flooding?) Played w/ the idle mixture w/ no apparent effect. The carb rebuild thing still the place to begin? Bulb seems firm, and squeezing it while idling has no effect either. So, how diificult is the carb rebuild... couple of hours?? I have some experience w/ motors... rebuilt a VW engine one time, but didn't rebuild the carb.

I also noticed that "iboats" did not sell points or condensors for this particular motor... any other parts sources that anyone knows about? And what about other parts that you would routinely replace... given that the carb is being rebuilt (and the age of the motor).

You should have a look at your parts manual or the brp website. I have an 82 - 15 HP. and it doesn't have points or condensers. I would imagine yours doesn't either. Rick.
