Please allow me to recap. I bought this motor on a boat. It had not been ran in several years (maybe 10). I fooled with it for about ten minutes and it fired up and ran great. I decided to take it for a test ride the following weekend. It quit running after a short period of time. I figured it overheated. I tore it down and replaced the thermostat and some gaskets, water tube and some seals and the water pump. It ran great after that, this is when I discovered the pee hole, it had great water flow after working on it.

I have asked this question several times of many different people. Is the water coming out of the pee hole suppose to be warm cold hot or whatever. I have had answers from the same temp as the bay water to almost hot enough to burn you. Does anyone really know what the temp of the discharge out the pee hole is suppose to be?

Please if you don't really know don't answer. The motor is a 1978.

Paul

I have a 9.5 and mine is warm to the touch but not real hot but warm. I can hold my hand in it for as long as I want.
Hope this helps. Take your wife's thermometer and hold it in the tell tell water and get a good close reading of it.

I would think that what ever t-stat is in motor would determine what the water temp is leaving the motor. Your manual should have a listing for temp. range for t-stat. From what I've read on the post 140 degree is about average.

I've also got a 9.5. One day I was checking t-stat and found out the little guy dosen't have a t-stat in it. I've been in 50 degree water and it still put out luke warm water.

Actually the temp of the water coming from the tell tale will probably be just a little warmer than the water temp the engine is running in. Heat being picked up from the lower part of the block...in the exhaust area. The stream of water is from where the water first enters the exhaust cover area of the engine.

Re: 9.9 Evinrude

In some engines the telltale stream comes from water that has not passed through the block (ambient water temp)and is input water pressure driven. On others it is water that has finished its pass through the block (warm to hot) and is output water pressure driven.

The 9.5 and 9.9 are entirely different engines, so don't go by what a 9.5 does.

I don't know which system the 9.9 uses, but that is the difference between the two systems.

I have a 15 hp Evinrude, it cycles bettween 143 and 151 degrees, the tell tale never gets more than luke warm though.... (the 15hp is the same engine with a bigger carb and a different exhaust tuner)

The pee water from my '88 9.9 Jonny doesn't get much warmer than the lake water it's running in. I had just checked this again 2 weekends ago so the memory's pretty fresh.
