I know this is going to be a really stupid question but here goes. I got my model number off my engine and went to searsdirect, put my number in, and every exploded picture shows a single cylinder motor (1 spark plug, 1 piston) but mine is a twin cylinder. Now my question is, am I missing something or could the tag have the wrong numbers on it? I bought the boat & motor in 1989, gave to my Dad a year later, recently got it back from him, and don't remember him getting a new motor for it so I was dumbfounded when my serial number came up as a 1995 motor. My model number is 225.581997 and the serial number is OEO92691. The searsdirect site says there is a safety problem with the flywheel but I couldn't find out anything about that so anybody have any thoughts on that. Thanks!

I don't think I need a flywheel, I was more curious about what the safety issue was and why the exploded view pictures all showed 1 cylinder motors and mine is a twin cylinder motor. If I do figure out that I need parts for it, then I will check out the site you mentioned. Thanks.

Never mind. I think I've solved the problem for you. In 1999, the model number for the standard length 9.9 was 225.581991. It's common enough to mistake a 1 for a 7, depending on the font used for the numbers. That would make perfect sense, since you say the thing was bought in 1989.

The parts diagrams for that model number show the 2 cyl. block.

I'll bet that's the answer.

That sounds pretty logical, but I talked to my Dad today and he said that he had took it back to sears because it wouldn't run and somehow the lady he was dealing with, misunderstood what he wanted to do. He said that she gave him a replacement motor which he didn't argue about, she let him have it and he took it. He just couldn't remember if it was in 1995 or not. He did say that it never ran right either and that he replaced the water pump and thermostat, eventually giving up on fixing it. I got it back from him in 2003 and got it running again for about 30 to 45 minutes on the lake when I slowed down one time it died never got it started again. Haven't messed with it since until now. I will check out the numbers again to make sure I didn't do as you suggested, but it looks like I'm back to the drawing board. Thanks.
