I have a 1988 9.9 gamefisher 225.581990 model. I replaced the coils and adjusted the points. I rebuilt the carburetor and got fresh non ethanol gas. I made sure I was getting spark on both plugs and wires. I have tried to get it started and nothing. a couple of times it sounded like a backfire in the water tub but that's all I got. it also feels real tight when I pull. I also tried starting fluid in the cylinders and still no go. Please help me if you can.

Re: 9.9 gamefisher starting issue

Don't use starting fluid, bad for a 2-stroke as it contains no oil. Use premixed fuel/oil in a squirt bottle, into the carb.

Have you done a compression test? (Or, is there compression in the cylinders? Remove plugs, put thumb over plug hole and it should blow your finger off, figuratively speaking, the hole when pulling the start rope.)

- Are the plug wires on the correct plugs?

- Have you checked spark with a tester, and found a nice hot blue-white spark?

Points should be changed as they could glaze over and not work properly.

compression on the top cylinder is 95 and the bottom is 100.

Hi, Agentxman. :welcome:

Backfire is ignition while the exhaust ports are open. Switch your plug wires.
