I have two late 70's, early 80's Johnson 9.9 ho outboards that are due for some fresh paint and decals. The paint is no big deal, but the decals seem to be pretty crazy price wise. The best I can find is a set of universal decals online for $42 per set and their not even a match. Does anyone know of an affordable source for replacement decals?
I don't care if their an exact match or not, but I don't want to pay top dollar for something thats not right anyhow or something that don't make it run any better.

Also, has anyone repainted one of the plastic 9.9-15hp covers from the same era? These look to be made of plastic not fiberglass like the larger covers.

Sure, remove the quotation marks and copy the link to your browser: "http://stores.ebay.com/Nanas-Decals"

If your old decals are still there, you can measure length, width, letter size, etc., and take a photo of them down to a local graphics/sign shop. They can do vinyl self-stick decals for not a lot of scratch.

Re: 9.9 Johnson decal source?

I tried the local sign shop, they want $20 for just the word 'Johnson', printed in black. That would be $40 just to label both sides with plain text. I tried several, all were the same. The original decals are nothing more than two wide stripes in red/orange and black, with 'Johnson" down each side. I can cut the color fields out by hand if I have to, but they wanted $40 for a piece of vinyl just to do that with.
I think its time to buy my own vinyl plotter. For as many of these as I'd like to do, it may be cheaper just to buy what I need to make my own. One shop tried to tell me that each roll of vinyl cost him $800. I priced decal vinyl, its not anywhere near that expensive.

I checked out the link above, they want $42 for a set of decals that aren't correct at all. I'd be better off just leaving the hood blank. I bought one set of decals about a year ago from a guy online and they were nearly identical, but I lost his info and don't see him selling there anymore. The ones I got before were for a larger motor and were under $20 shipped. They were so close that they overlaid right over the marks left from the original decals so close that I couldn't see any sign of the old decal marks.
