hi,
have an '82 9.9. have owned the motor for 4 years and never any problems.

i took the boat out today, and as i was idling out of the no-wake zone, the motor missed once or twice, then fluctuated in rpm for a little while before smoothing out. i got out of the no wake zone and ran at WOT to where i planned to fish (about 4 miles). no problems at all at WOT. when i got there, i idled around looking at the depth finder (no problems then either) before i remembered that i had left an important tackle box in my car back at the ramp. so back i go at WOT, again no problems. when i slowed down in the no wake zone, right as i got to the exact same spot as before, the motor missed again, just a couple of times and then continued to run fine....
fast forward through another trip back out to the fishing spot, then about 2 hours of trolling with no problems.... i'm beginning to think i hit an area of magnetic flux or something at that one spot... then it happens one more time.. just a quick miss and back to normal.

so my question is, what could cause this, and how can i troubleshoot.

my first instinct was that i got some bad gas or something, or maybe there's a little water in the bottom of my tank.. but could this be the beginnings of a problem with the ignition?

thanks for the help

matt

That is probably it. ;)

If the plugs are old, replace them with ONLY CHAMPION brand of the correct heat range.

yeah, i'm going to check the normal stuff and replace the plugs. they are probably a year old, and i troll a lot, but have never had fouling problems before. i always use champion l77jc4 (i think that's the right number, anyway i'm sure i'm using the right plug)

matt

And obviously, if that's what you think, then clean out the tank for your peace of mind.

Before you enter that spot in the lake next time start humming the theme from the Twilight Zone until you are through it.

you know, if the third time hadn't happened in a different spot, i would probably just put a few garlic cloves in the bow of the boat, flush the motor with some holy water, and take along a friend who has been recently forgiven for his transgressions (unlike myself).

that in addition to whistling the twilight zone theme.

matt
