I have a 1989 9.9 Johnson that the manual stater has gone bad, the spring loaded gear device that the cord is wrapped around. I call it a manual starter but I am having no luck finding one. Is it called something else? Maybe it has another name is why I can't find it. I would go to the dealer but that is a good drive away.

I think you are talking about the pinion, but am not sure.
Go to the johnson web site and locate your engine in the parts break down and it will show you all the parts in the starter. Then you will know what to ask for, as well as have the part number.

That's it. Thanks. I can't believe they want $173.15 for the assembly. The spring is what broke. Has anyone ever just replaced the spring? Is it difficult?

The spring is a replacement part.I I have not replaced that perticular sping but have replaced many recoil starter springs. Usually not to bad if you pay attention when it comes apart.

Re: 9.9 Johnson manual Starter

I have many times. You simply remove the starter and remove old spring, put the end of the new spring in the outside lock, it's the slit in the outside of the lower housing. It may be bent from use, bend it back straight with plyers. Wind the spring counter clockwise from the outside in to the cup, it will get easier as you keep winding. Once the spring is fully seated into the housing (make sure the washer is still at the bottom of the housing) , take the plastic rope retainer and fit it in the spring, it usually just drops in. Turn the platic part that holds the rope counter clockwise around 2 or 3 times, it will load up the spring. Then wrap the rope around counter clockwise around the platic rope retainer leaving around half a foot of rope loose. Pull the rope through the hole in the motor housing where the pull handle it. Put the starter in place, there is a lock tang at the bottom of the starter that fits into a hole near the threaded hole for the starter bolt. Put the starter bolt in and tighten. Remember that the starter is sprung at this point and will try and fight to recoil, hand strength will prevent it. Look at the starter and make notes before you remove it on the position of things. This is all from memory of doing this last weekend, don't sue me if it's wrong (directions of rope turning and stuff like that). According to the diagram it's all counter clockwise.

Or, you could get yourself and OMC service manual for your motor and there is step by step instruction for the job. You'll never regret having the manual for so many different jobs. Best of luck. Rick.
