9.9 Johnson - old & tired - what to do?

Hi Guys - I have an older 9.9 - not sure the year - its the dark green colored.<br /><br />I brought it to a repairman - he says there is only 75lbs of compression and its not worth fixing<br /><br />Questions: how tough is it to rebuild? he said the lower unit is fine.<br /><br />Otherwise where is a good spot to sell parts off of it?<br /><br />Thanks in advance!

Nah, it's shot. Save yourself some aggravation and send it to me, then get yourself a new one.<br /><br />Seriously, do a decarb treatment as DJ suggests and recheck the compression yourself.<br /><br />I doubt the wrench's diagnosis, for this reason: Both cylinders almost never go bad at the same time or at the same rate. He quotes you one reading.<br /><br />BTW, a 9.9 can't be much over 30. That is not old for a OMC small engine.<br /><br />Give us the model number off the mount plate so we can determine the exact age.<br /><br />Good luck.

Ok guys, got it back from the mechanic - he said he got it to sputter alittle bit - thats all. <br /><br />Here is the model & serial #'s<br /><br />98-69S 13090699<br /><br />I'm going to pick up a can of DEEP CREEP and soak the cylinders for a day or two. I'll get a fresh tank of gas and oil and see what happens.<br /><br />Any other comments, suggestions or information would be welcomed.<br /><br />Thanks.

Give it a whirl and let us know.<br /><br />If you can get some Sea Foam (NAPA) throw some of that in the fuel while you run it.<br /><br />Make sure you have a good water pump stream from the tell tale.
