9.9 johnson Quest.

does this motor need a lead additive in the gas mixture? Model: 10R74S<br />Any help is appreciated.

No lead, King. Even in the days when almost all gas was leaded we sought out unleaded marine gas for our outboard engines.<br /><br />Red sky at night. . . <br />JB

i was concerned of engine damage running a 74 motor without the lead, my 1976 85 hp merc uses an additive and runs fine the last 18 years i have had it. I figured the 74 johnson would also require the additive. thank you for your reply

I always thought lead was added to gas to protect valve seats. 2-strokes, of course, have no valves. What would an additive contribute to a 2-stroke, old or new?
