1986 9.9 electric start. The throttle is very hard to rotate, the clamp thumb screw is lossened. I suspect cams/slots are badly worn. How is the rubber grip and stop sw. removed to get to the cams/slots etc.

Re: 9.9 Johnson tiller

Welcome PDR!

Noticed your post down the list and thought I'd give you a hand....

What you want to do first is to detemine if the hard rotation is under the flywheel or in the tiller handle. Easy to do.

Look on the engine where the throttle cable connects to the tower control shaft. Disconnect this and move the shaft manually. If it moves freely, probably the problem is in the tiller handle.

What happens if the original grease in the handle gets old and hard and makes moving the twist grip hard.

Easy to fix. Look at the base of the twist grip for two round tabs. Push these in and pull the twist grip off to expose the twist helix. The cams in the helix will be right there so be careful of how it comes apart so you can get it back together right. Clean all the bits and pieces and reassemble. In extreme cases the control cable itself will go bad and must be replaced.

Keep us posted and post any questions you may have.

Re: 9.9 Johnson tiller

OBJ

Thank you. I had read about the two pins but had been unable to disengage then. I was not pushing them with enough force. I unfastened the throttle cable, both sides move, my first impression is that the handle is is the problem.

Thanks again
PRD
