9.9 Johnson - where's the shift rod disconnect?

So, I waited until the last minute to change the water pump impeller on my 2001 J10RVLSIC. What should have been a quick job seems to be taking too long, and a few hiccups to boot.

This is a long shaft model, if that matters.

I got the six bolts that hold the gear case to the exhaust housing out without any of them seizing. I got the gear case to drop down almost and inch, but I don't see any place to disconnect the shift rod, just a straight rod going up from the gear case.

What am I missing?

The connecter ( brass ) is right there at the joint.----------You may have the move the shift lever and pry on the lower unit to establish unuff room to REMOVE the upper screw.------------------On assembly make sure the notch on the shift rod is lined up before putting the screw in.------------Then it all goes back together and will shift properly.

If I read your model number correctly, your motor is a long shaft. The coupling may be at the upper joint and will require removal of the bolts from the extension housing to access it as racerone has described.
