Hello, I am working on a mid 1980's 9.9 Evinrude. I want to change the lower crankshaft bearing. The only number I can see is 6204. Does anyone know of a cross reference for this bearing or do I need to get it from BRP? Thanks.

Yes it is, but I know there is more to it than just those numbers. I can but a 6204 bearing at Lowes, while it may fit, I am sure it is not the correct bearing.

The outboard motor companies along with most others do not make all their parts. Bearings are one & that is a common bearing number. Yes, just go to a automotive dealer or if you can get it at Lowes, it will be the same no matter where you buy it.

The bearing at Lowes was an enclosed bearing, while the OEM one is not. I know there are other numbers that go after the 6204, that specify other characteristics of the bearing. I will go to the autoparts store to see if I can match it. I will post what i find.

If it is a 6204 I believe there would be several choices. 2Rs would be sealed and a ZZ would be shielded. In either case you could pop the seals / shields off and have an open bearing. Then simply wash the grease out with a solvent. The only other option might be a high speed application bearing that will have a greater bearing tolerance to allow for expansion due to heat. In the case of an outboard it would be a standard bearing.
