9.9 Mariner jumps out of gear

I changed the motor on my 20 foot pontoon last year to a 1996 9.9 mariner outboard last year to go to a quieter lake, and I noticed if I give it throttle to fast it jumps out and back into gear, I tightened down the friction lock on the commander 2000 shift controller and this seamed to stopped the problem. And I ran it all last year with no problems. I was wondering is this is a normal thing due to the type of boat and the weight its pushing or if their is some deeper problem.
