Can anyone tell me what to check on my 1987 mariner 9.9? I have checked all the help forums but none have helped me so far. The engine started right up for the owner when I bought it day before yesterday. Got it home and it will not start and I have no spark at the plugs. It is getting plenty of fuel and has good compression. Help! Thanks

Look for a missing lanyard key, if so equipped. This will be a thing you attach to your wrist, and the other end attaches to the lanyard switch.
If not,or lanyard checks out ok, make sure the motor is level. They have a switch that kills the ignition if the motor strikes something and kicks-up.
Last resort, find a black with yellow stripe wire at the cd box, and disconnect it. if fire returns, recheck all kill switches and wire harness for short to gound. If not, time to take it back to the seller.

It sure sounds to me like there's something you're missing in the starting procedure. Maybe a safety lanyard has been pulled off or an ignition switch is off (if there is one)... Did you get the operator's manual with it? If so, you should go through it carefully so you can tell the proper starting procedure. If you saw the guy start it, then you took it home and now can't start it, it seems to me more likely to be a problem with how you're trying to start it than a mechanical problem with the motor.

FYI, the moderators prefer that you make one thread per question, rather than starting a new thread repeating the question. If you Q falls down the list without a response, you can post a followup to your own post in order to "bump" it back up to the top of the subjects.

Brent
