9.9 merc fuel pump problem

I have a 1988 9.9 merc the only way to get it started is to put fuel into the carb and then it will dies unless i pump the ball continuously. does that mean the fuel pump is bad. can it be cleaned or does it need to be rebuilt

There should be a diaphram kit available for your fuel pump.<br /><br />But if you have to put fuel into the carb in the first place to get it started...I would clean the carb up then work on the fuel pump...unless the fuel pump is located on the carb...do them both at once.<br /><br />TMD

Diaphram kit should be around $4.00.
