1997, Mercury 4 cycle will not start unless I put gas manually into both spark plug holes and replace plugs. The plugs are dry. When gas is put in cylinder it will start first pull and run great and restart all day long. If it sets overnight it is back to not starting.

I'm not real familiar with that motor, but it sure sounds like a choke problem to me. Does this motor have an electric choke? If so, it may not be working. If manual choke, make sure the choke flaps are closing all the way when choked. Same if it has electric choke. Others will have some input.

If it is a pull start engine make sure you pull out the Choke lever...it should be in the center. Pump the primerbulb up hard aswell.

TMD

Re: 9.9 Mercury 4cycle will not start

This engine does not appear to have a manual choke since there is no choke lever to pull on the outside of the cowling. It is a pull to start engine. I have tried pumping the primebulb tight. There is a spring actuated lever on the bottom of the carbarater. If I pull this down to open what I assume is the choke?, open the throttle and pump the primebulb, I have got it to start that way. Does not work all the time though. If I had to make an uneducated guess on this problem I would say it was a choke problem also. Is it a difficult thing to change or correct?

The choke is a plate that closes off the venturi to make the engine draw more fuel than air, for starting purposes.

If you look at the carb it should have a plate, that you can close with a linkage from outside the hood.

TMD
