I am struggling w my 1990 9.9 evinrude!!! I replaced lower unit seals bout month ago, and since then it has never shifted correctly!!! I was up till 1am last nite, had the lower unit off, gearcase apart, 3 times!!! Everyting is put back together correctly from what I can tell!!! The thing shifts in and out of gear correctly about 3 out of 5 times. With the motor off and in neutral, it will sometimes not click all the way in forward or reverse!! BUT, if i spin the prop 1/4 turn and try again, it goes right in gear!! Is there something that I am doing wrong to make this happen?? FISHING OPENER WAS TODAY< AND I CANT GET OUT.......UGH!! PLEASE, any advise would be appreciated!

GO FISHING!!! If it is working the way you describe it is working properly. It won't always shift to forward and reverse with the motor not running. With the motor running you will find it is the same as when you turn the prop. manually. When on the water, snap it in and out of gear rather than nursing it. Best of luck. Rick.

How is it when it is running and you are either on muffs, in a test bucket or on the water ???

Re: 9.9 Shifting Problems

okay, I will fill it with lube and try it. Reason that I was asking is because I called a local marina and spoke with a tech, and he told me it should shift in and out of gear EVERY SINGLE TIME when it is off, and that it didn't matter what position the prop was in. I assume he is wrong????
