I recently aquired a 1974 9.9 Ted Williams motor for $80.00. I Knew it had no spark but didn't think it would be this hard to find parts. The local marina basicly laughed when I called about coils. They said to try a lawnmower repair shop. I should have done my homework on these motors, but I guess with only $80.00 invested it might be worth the hassel to find parts if there are any out there. If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 9.9 ted williams no spark

I assume you have a Tecumseh powerhead. I have a similar motor. I would suggest you get the coils at a lawnmower repair shop too since what you actually have is a lawnmower engine adapted to an outboard chassis. It was not uncommon practice between the 50's and 80's for outboards to have powerheads made by lawnmower engine makers rather than the outboard manufacturer to make thier own.

If you remove the part and take it to a place that works on old Tecumseh engines you shouldnt have too much hassle. Maybe take the whole outboard too, incase they arent busy and want to eyeball it. Depending on how its put together you may be able to adapt a similar coil to the purpose as well.

I was told today by a gentleman at Discount Marine that these engines din't have coils. They have transformers that never go bad. So I don't Know I have to decied if its worth it to me to fix. I need a new transformer or coil what ever it is cause we fried one. OOPPs. Discount Marine says no replacements are available. Better do my research next time. Thanks for the reply.
