Could this happen if it was only running on one cylinder? Cleaned up some wiring, seemed to run cooler and a little smoother. Wont know if it really worked until i try it on the water.

no real answer other than have you looked at the water impeller?? i got a 15 ted williams it does the same thing i'll be putting in a new impeller soon to see if that does the trick

I myself just picked up a very clean low low hrs eska/ted williams 9.9 same as 15 just smaller carb that pees way hotter water than I would think would be normal... It also seems to have almost like a weep hole in the top side of the cyl head that will drip and let out water...

Re: 9.9 Ted Williams Running hot

hey blkops187 the water exiting the pee hole on my 15 teddy w is fairly warm too but i'll be installing a new water impeller soon. for parts on your 9.9 have you visited sears online? they still have some parts for the ted williams just have your serial number and model number, i don't believe your motor should be leaking out of the hole on top the the cylinder head. its where i think you can have a thermostat installed mine has a plug. but food for thought as long as the cylinder head doesn't get hot enough to cook an egg you should be okay but i would recommend putting in a new impeller or at least inspecting the one inside. also water tube inside has a seal by the power head can go bad and your motor will not properly cool. good way to check is take a siphon or some low grade pump to pump water up the tube (when you have the lower unit off) and inspect it to see if its leaking. helps if you have a friend while doing this. any way good luck hope this helps

Yeah the hole is in the side of the cylinder head it almost "gurgles" water out of it...size whys it probley 1/8th inch or smaller. I was thinking about replacing the impeller but was wondering if i should replace the housing aswell? Also I noticed today it pees out off/on at idle and almost mist kinda but is constant good stream anywhere past 1/4th-3/8th throttle. Can you or anybody post some tear down pics/install or upload that page out of the manual? Thanks

Re: 9.9 Ted Williams Running hot

ok i think i know what your talking about my 15 has a little hole on each side of the powerhead, but only one on each side and it on the top cylinder. to my knowledge i don't believe water should be exiting there. sounds like your powerhead has a seal propblem. the housing on your motor is probably fine just inspect it for cracks or holes, cause you never know with a used motor, but if it doesn't your fine just replace the seal where the water tube goes into, its a little black o-ring.well i don't think your motor is cooling as effectivly as it should, my 15 even in a 5 gal bucked at idel streams water and is only intermittent when it sucks air. i don't have a manuel for them. i'll tell you what i did i went to searspartsdirect.com and entered my model # once i found my model number they have blown up diagrams of the outboard in sections like gear housing, power assembly, ect... you can copy and print them once you do that they have a parts list for the diagram, on every single number even if they no longer sell it, and i just wrote down ever part for every number, it took a while but now i have a half way okay manual or at least a break down of my outboard, working on it is why i joined this site. thats the best i could do ya blkops187 hope it helps.

Thanks for the info axeman. I'm gonna inspect and replace the seals/o-rings on the cooling tube and go from there. Took the motor out today and ran her WOT for about 25minutes and she stayed pretty cool for the most part other than the lack of a steady stream while idle alltho it is getting better.
