What is the actual power difference between a 9.9 and 15 hp motor. It seems logically the 15 would be a third more powerful but logically doesn't always work. I'm wondering if it would be worth it to step it up a notch. I have a valco 14ft.

Thanks for any info

Re: 9.9hp compared to 15hp

The difference: 5.1 hp. :)
I ran a 10 hp evinrude(sportwin) on my 12' aluminum boat. It brought the bow up a little, then planed and moved along pretty well.
Like so many, though, I wanted FASTER. So I bought another resto.-an 18 hp Fastwin. It brought the bow up, hit plane, and smoked down the river. Keep in mind that the other difference between 9.9 and 15 hp is weight. On a small boat, it doesn't take a lot of difference to make a serious difference. Just the same, if I can do it on a 12' aluminum boat, you can probably afford to move up on yours fairly safely. Personal opinion: Get the 15. You'll never want to go smaller again. Keep the 10 in the garage as a backup, use it as a kicker on another boat, or sell it. The market's good, especially at this time of year.
