so today was the day that i put my boat in the water for the first time.. we put it in and it started right up.. let it idle for a min and put it in reverse and it kept stalling when we finally got it to go we went about a quater mile out and the buzzer went off ..we stoped th engin.. i noteced that the water was not coming out from the engine anymore i think it over heated .. im going to do the water pump and i have all the screws out i just cannot get the pin out that holds it in... als does anyone know why it kept stalling out when i went to put it in gear>???????? sorry there are a bunch of questions in there... thanks.....

Its new to you right? Obviously unknown service history.

To be on the safe side, its nedessary to go through the engine and do all the maintainance before frying the pistons, which will definately happen if you try to force the issue from your description.

Heres what I did last yr when I bought the same engine, first I ordered the factory service manual, $45
www.outboardbooks.com

Rebuilt all 6 carbs with rebuild kits ( available here on iBoats $22 ea)
Decarbed pistons w/ seafoam treatment.
Compression test, 80-85psi ok.
Did a spark gap test 7/16th inch gap , it failed test.
Drained and changed gear oil, new seals on drain screws.(get seals here)
Water pump.
All new fuel feed hoses, bulb. New clamps.
Change fuel filter on engine.
Visually inspect coils closely for cracks.
Test run on a hose. Fix any problems found.
REmove prop, look for fishing line on shaft. New stainless cotter pin.
You can do al that in one day.

Its quitting in gear because its not running on all cyls, could be spark or fuel.
If the carbs are gunked up and its probably not running on all cylinders, no fuel = no oil. The unlubed cyl's will melt pistons in short order if you try to get it going on the water without fixing it first.

you need to release the shift rod, under the bottom of the carbs, may have to take starter off to see it. trouble shoot , compression and spark test should have been done before you purchased it. i really would like to see all cylinders in the 90's, but with in 10 % is acceptable, as guages read differently. being a 1990 it does not have alcohol resistant fuel lines, read ethanol and carb cleaning, here>>> http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=299680
