90 48 SPL Tilt and Trim Interchange

Hi Guys, I have a 90 48 SPL Evinrude. It currently only has the manual tilt. I'm wanting to install a tilt and trim system on the motor. I've looked at the CMC PT135 unit but $500 bucks is a little high. Can I retrofit a used factory unit off another motor. If so what years and HP units will interchange.

Thanks
Rob

383,

You are probably not going to find an OEM tilt/trim unit for less than the CMC unit. Used ones (good) are rare and people selling them know it.

If you get lucky, you may find one on ebay. The unit you need will be from any of the 2-cylinder John/Rudes in the 40-50 hp. range from the late eighties on.

djohns19 is right, pretty difficult to find a used OEM unit. If you do, for a 1990 48, you will have to find one no older that 1989. This is the year they made the change in the 40-50 hp. engine.

The other thing is you will need the electical part of the system also including the relays. One way to go is if you can find a complete used engine possibly with a blown powerhead that you can get cheap enough and use it as a doner.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like if I want one bad enough, a CMC unit is the way to go. I'll have to start saving after the new baby in July.

Rob
RR70@infoave.net

383, I purchased a new CMC last year after chasing same problem with my Evinrude 70hp. Tried all possibility and no results especially due from fact that transom mount and plate are different from the ones with Tilt & Trim from factory, so you'll have to find complete assembly.
I can say I am a very happy camper with CMC, easy to install, runs like a champ, even at -12 degrees it will tilt up & down with no problems.
Go for it, you won't be disappointed, and if you can get the one with trim gauge, it' will be better (but more wires to run).
