I am a newbie and just picked up an 18' bayliner 1990 with a 90hp force. Seems to be in real good shape (motor clean, carbs rebuilt, new coil packs, etc) I am somewhat mechanically inclined so I've ordered a manual and plan on getting real familiar with the engine. In the meantime, I would like to start the motor up to see how it runs. (seller said it ran good at the end of last season) I have the earmuffs and will figure out how to use them. Question is - I'm not sure if there is fuel in the tank (its an inboard tank) and if there is should I drain it. Once thats taken care of what octane fuel should I fill it up with and do I need to mix oil in with it. Should I also add in some sort of additive? Thanks for all your help.

How long has it set? Most Bayliners with a built in tank have a fuel guage. Does it work? If in doubt remove the sending unit and visually check the gas.If it's empty then fill it with regular or mid-grade.If it has set for a while the gas might still be good and then the water pump impeller should be changed. The motor requires a gas/oil mixture of 50-1 1 pint to 6 gal gas.Gas sold today will have Ethanol in it.Ethanol will destroy older fuel lines and hoses including the squeezie.J

Thanks so much for the advice. I will check. What oil do you recommend to use and should I add a stabilizer.

Safest bet is to drain all old fuel.

You can use any TCW-3 oil, 2.6 ounces per gallon of gas.
You can get full synthetic pretty darn cheap if you shop around, your motor will smoke a lot less.

Add a can of Seafoam to your gas to maintain the fuel system. 1 ounce per gallon of gas.

The seller said he ran it last season no problem. he also flushed the carbs and replaced the water pump impeller. I see the fuel gauge but not sure it works. Where is the sending unit?
Thanks

the easiest thing to do is mix up a gallon of gas and oil 50-1 ratio and pour it in the tank, then see if the gauge moves, the muffs will go over the inlet ports on the bottom of the lower unit turn on the water and start her up,the sending unit sits on top of the gas tank and has a float that goes into the trank, that sends a siginal to the guage on the dash,if he added fuel stableizer to the gas before storing it it should be fine.
