I am looking for opinions.. I don't have a lot of cash but I am very comfortable with engine/mechanical work as well as electrical. I am looking at both a 21' Citation 1988 w/ a 5.0 Mercruiser v8. v.s. a 20' Baylner 1990 w/ a 4.3l OMC. The later has a Cobra drive.. The Bayliner would be 2K cheaper. I have looked at both from a upholstery, floor rot, cosmetic stand point and they are equal. I haven't gotten to take either for a drive or review mechanics. Thoughts? ...

The merc powered boat is a modern model with easy to get parts and service the OMC is NOT

Re: 90 Bayliner v.s. 88 Citation

Sorry for the confusion:

21' 1988 Citation w/ 5.0L Mercruiser, drive unsure

20' 1990 Bayliner w/ 4.3L OMC and Cobra Drive (also 2K less)

The Citation is defunct, but do I care if it has a Mercruiser?

Are you saying I won't find parts for the OMC cheap/easy?

They say the parts for OMC's are getting harder and harder to come by. Service as well may be hindered because of this....

bayliner has far more strikes against it than for it.
1. bayliner
2.omc.
3.cobra
citation plus's
1. mercruiser
2. 5.0 parts available.
3. probably alpha drive or better parts available

Based on the replies, I get the impression that an older Baylliner should be avoided at all cost. With the added research I've done on the OMC/Cobra's, I think I will look elsewhere.
