'90 Capri 1700 bowrider steering/ transom saver?

First (powered) boat, two questions:
1) steering has 1/8 turn (@ wheel) play. Is "Teleflex" cable adjustable, or do I need to replace it?

2) Am considering "Transom Saver" towing bracket for o/b. (Force 50). Has anyone used one? How to attach to trailer? (No roller)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, Thanks

Welcome to iboats!

1. Can you tell where the play is? It could be the helm (what the steering wheel attaches to) or maybe just a loose nut where the cable attaches to the motor lever.

2. If your trailer is like mine with the rear crossmember well forward of the transom, you will need something like this. However, transom savers are generally recommended only for motors with power tilt & trim, which I'm guessing you don't have. Fortunately, as long as your transom is sound, you can just use the trailering bracket. Note: This is NOT the thin metal tilt lock bracket. That part isn't strong enough for the job.

From the "sound," the play appears to be at the engine end of the steering cable/linkage. There is no sign of external play, as I replaced the bushing at the steering arm link. I haven't taken the cable out of the engine through-tube. Is this difficult to do?, or can a former automotive technician tackle it?

also, what, exactly is a towing bracket, asit relates to the engine? My boat did not come with one.

Removing the cable from the tube isn't that difficult, but you'll probably have to unbolt the motor from the transom and slide it to port to get the clearance you need.

The trailering bracket is #24 here.
