90 HP 3cyl ELPTO. 1998 (I think)

Took the boat out for a spin last night and something happened that never happened before, don't know if I should be worried or not. So I'm looking for anyone else had similar problems or has any ideas on what could have gone wrong / what to look for?.

So this is what happened:

Engine started fine
Left the marina and enter a 5 mph zone, it means running at about 1500 rpm for 20 mins to get to the big rivers.
Once on the big rivers went WOT for about 45 mins to just blow to cobwebs out (on my boat WOT = 5000 RPM)
Returning is the same 1500 RPM for 20 mins
Everything fine and engine did not miss a beat the whole time but....
On entering the marina and going down to idle for a few mins, when docking the boat the engine cut out on me going from FWD to reverse, that has not happened for a long time.
She re-started up fine but the nearby church must have thought a new pope had been chosen :embarassed:, never seen so much smoke. Docked the boat and shut down started the engine again - still mega smoke, gave it some revs with the fast idle lever (just for a short time) no signs of the smoke clearing.

It was too late for any investigations + any testing would have been a bit anti-social towards other boat owners.

Idea's anyone?

Is that a premix motor? Maybe the fuel pump diaghram has a hole, allow raw fuel and oil into the crankcase?

On an injected motor, maybe the oil pump is stuck open?

Thanks Chris

It's Oil injected.

How to check the oil pump?

I suppose I can run off a temporary premixed tank and monitor the throughput of the pump, or is it easier?
Maybe checking the alignment marks and free operation on the unit is enough or is there something in the pump itself that can stick open. I never had the pump off or apart so forgive my ignorance.

Easiest fix without worrying about hurting anything is to remove the 3 bolts (on a 2002 model) and pull out the pump....may have to remove one oil hose from it to get it out.....grasp the gear protruding from the end of it and pull it and it's shaft out of the pump. Put the pump back in and run your pre mix. That will take all of 15 minutes and cost you nothing but your time. Premix is 1 pt. TC-W3 to 6 gal regular unleaded.....in case you forgot. The pump is a gear pump and no turnie no flowie. Oil in the onboard tank will stay there and keep the oil alarm from sounding.

Thanks

Might just do that, I was toying with the idea moving to premix anyway, not only for confidence, but also because the alarm doesn't work, I know I should have fixed it but haven't (yet).

I have limited time over the next 2 weeks with birthdays and holidays but once I figure it out I'll report on the problem and the fix.
